CIRCLEFORNIA

CALIFORNIA EQUIVALENT FINDER
LINKED UNLINKED FIELD NIGHT
METHOD
circlefornia measures any point on earth against california: population 39.4M, product $4.10T (2024, nominal).

population: gridded population of the world v4 (CIESIN / NASA SEDAC), 15 arc-minute cells, land-fraction corrected, renormalized per country to world bank 2024 totals — ~96,000 mass points.

product: DOSE (PIK, 1,667 reported subnational regions, 83 countries) supplies each cell's local GDP per capita where its region is covered — roughly 57% of cells by count, weighted toward the countries that report subnationally. elsewhere, national GDP per capita fills in. every country's product is then rescaled to its world bank national total, so DOSE sets the shape of inequality inside a country while world bank still anchors the totals. this is why california's own product circle now nearly matches its people circle — the mainland average no longer swallows it.

city names are geonames, labels only. circles are true geodesic circles — the projection makes them ovals.

linked — both circles grow from one point. the ring between them is the gap between where people are and where product is.
unlinked — assemble california from two places. one circle gathers only people, the other only product. drag either pin.
field — every point on earth colored by the ratio of its two radii. cyan: product arrives first. magenta: people arrive first. pale points are californias.
